The newly published Blackstar Theory: The Last Works of David Bowie takes a close look at Bowie’s ambitious late works: his surprise ‘comeback’ project The Next Day (2013), the off-Broadway musical Lazarus (2015) and Blackstar, the 2016 album that preceded the artist’s death by two days. In this talk, Dr Leah Kardos explores the references to psychotherapeutic drama (cinema, teleplays and pantomime) embedded in these works – subconscious narratives that play out in memory and dream space, messy confrontations with iterations of the self that appear as stock characters and Jungian archetypes.
