Christmas has more icons than the desktop on my laptop – from the classic nativity play to the Queen’s Speech to the iconic Norwegian tree in trafalgar square. And into this pantheon of icons slip The Nutcracker, the ballet that truly exudes the yuletide season, and Brown’s Hotel, one of London’s cosiest hotels.
From the moment guests arrive, the storytelling begins, with Christmas decorations and Tchaikovsky’s iconic music setting the scene while characters from the ballet, dressed in their Edwardian costumes, lead you to your table. At the table, the immersive (don’t worry, it’s not too immersive) experience sees diners given clues explaining a mysterious disappearance and help the characters uncover the missing item’s whereabouts. As the evening progresses The Nutcracker narrative is revealed through a series of classic performances, which take place between tables as you eat. As you eat your three-course set menu, starting with lazed beetroot and goats curd, enjoy Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy pas de deux, or while you delight on Sutton Hoo chicken and onion squash served on chestnuts watch as the the ballerinas pirouette. The meal ends with gingerbread crème brûlée and as the meal progresses you’ll discover more clues revealed within the table decorations and dishes and helping guests along as they solve their puzzle. The whole event is a collaboration with Black Rabbit Projects, who specialise in events featuring award-winning actors, magicians, and ballet dancers, expertise which is all brought to bear telling the story of Clara and the Nutcracker. Tickets to the dinner are incredibly good value, with a three course dinner (including a welcome drink) as part of The Nutcracker Experience coming in at £98 for adults, free for children under four and £49 for children aged under thirteen.
