The newly published Blackstar Theory: The Last Works of David Bowie takes a close look at Bowie’s ambitious late works: his surprise ‘comeback’ project The Next Day (2013), the off-Broadway musical Lazarus (2015) and Blackstar, the 2016 album that preceded the artist’s death by two days. In this talk, Dr Leah Kardos explores the references to psychotherapeutic drama (cinema, teleplays and pantomime) embedded in these works – subconscious narratives that play out in memory and dream space, messy confrontations with iterations of the self that appear as stock characters and Jungian archetypes.

After switching to the autumn for the past two editions, the RA Summer Exhibition is back at its rightful place in the calendar. Alison Wilding is coordinating this year’s show, which has the theme ‘climate’, and includes works by Grayson Perry, the Singh Twins and Cristina Igleisas.
Summer at the RA is not just a time of year, it’s the world’s most joyful art experience. Run without interruption since 1769, the Summer Exhibition showcases art in all forms, from prints, painting, film and photography, to architectural works and sculpture by invited artists, Royal Academicians and emerging talent. After two years in winter, it’s back where it should be. The theme chosen by the exhibition’s coordinator, Alison Wilding RA, is ‘Climate’. Whether as a crisis or opportunity, or simply our everyday experience, it is an all-embracing subject. Whether you’re an experience seeker, a budding art collector or a culture-craving family, we know you’ll find the art for you: the exhibition features two rooms of prints selected by Grayson Perry RA, a structure made of elephant dung bricks, and new work by the Singh Twins. Outside this year is a large-scale immersive installation bringing nature and water to the courtyard, by Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias. Most of the works are available to buy, and proceeds from the Summer Exhibition directly support the exhibiting artists and the RA’s charitable work, including training the next generation of artists in the Royal Academy Schools. It's been 70 years since the Fred Perry polo shirt made its debut. Little did its founder know just how much his sportswear would leave such an enduring legacy. From Gorrilaz to Amy Winehouse, Raf Simons to Comme des Garçons, the Fred Perry polo shirt has been adopted and adapted by some big names and has become an emblem of various British subcultures. Now, the Design Museum is looking back over the 70 years since the iconic shirt was created with a free exhibition of archival material and specially commissioned films. Explore the brand’s cultural impact from mods to skinheads, filmmakers to sports stars, and how it has evolved since being founded by three-time Wimbledon champion Fred Perry. If you’ve ever been to a long music festival–and by long, we don’t mean Friday after work until Sunday morning–you know how after a week or so, you really wish that life would always be the way it had been during the gathering of people that’s just about to dry up and blow away, except in your memory.
Well, multiply that exhilaration by 100, and you might be getting close to the fever and fervor brought about in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada, about 100 miles north-northeast of Reno in late August and early September. The Burning Man festival is more about the journey that is Black Rock City, not the destination. It’s a community that springs from the sand and leaves no trace when it’s ended. It’s kind of like Brigadoon, except they burn a giant statue in a bachanal rite. This year’s Burning Man runs from 8/28 to 9/5, and you have got to be there. Tickets? Yeah, we’ve got tickets. What did you expect? We have them waiting for you. We’re VIP Concierge!! Check out the package:
Get your Burning Man on in the wildest way possible! We have it all, and it’ll be waiting for you. Please do not hesitate to contact The Lexo Club Concierge for more information about the festival and are exclusive VIP ticket packages. Regular tickets are also available. Tate Britain’s central galleries will be transformed again by a large scale immersive artwork. Every year Tate Britain invites an artist to create an exciting new commission for the grand spaces of the Duveen Galleries at the heart of the building. In 2022 the commission will be by Hew Locke. Previous artists have included Heather Phillipson, Mark Wallinger, Martin Creed, Fiona Banner, Simon Starling, Phyllida Barlow, Pablo Bronstein, Cerith Wyn Evans, Anthea Hamilton and Mike Nelson.
Hew Donald Joseph Locke (born 13 October 1959) is a British sculptor and contemporary visual artist based in Brixton, London. In 2000 he won a Paul Hamlyn Award and the EASTinternational Award. In 2010 he was shortlisted for the Fourth plinth, Trafalgar Square, London. In 2015 Prince William, Duke of Cambridge dedicated Locke's public sculpture The Jurors, commissioned to commemorate 800 years since the signing of Magna Carta. Locke has had several solo exhibitions in the UK and USA, and is regularly included in international exhibitions and Biennales. His works have been acquired by collections such as The Tate gallery, London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In 2016 The National Portrait Gallery, London, acquired a portrait of Locke by Nicholas Sinclair. The rose and fashion are inextricably entwined. Roses, like fashion, are a luxury and they are ephemeral. They are both ‘shown’ seasonally, their appeal is multi-sensorial, and they each incite passion and obsession.
The Garden Museum’s spring/summer 2022 exhibition will explore the use of roses in fashion from the Victorian era to today, with designs from Alexander McQueen, Philip Treacy, Ashish and Comme des Garçons amongst other historic and modern collections. Throughout history artists, designers and writers have explored this fragrant flower and its deterrent thorns (technically they are prickles) – a conjunction of opposites – to draw out illusions to love, beauty, sexuality, sin, rites of passage, degradation, and death. A creative collaboration between guest curator Amy de la Haye and set designer Simon Costin, this exhibition will also draw inspiration from the Garden Museum collection and gardens to explore the tensions between wild and cultivated, natural and artificial roses within fashion apparel, image making and contemporary craft practices. Fashions designed by Alexander McQueen (fashion’s rosarian) and Comme des Garçons will be shown alongside ‘rosy’ undergarments dating from the 18th century and the latest gender-neutral designs by Ashish. Accessories will include including millinery by Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy; a rose bucket bag by Lulu Guinness and a selection of gorgeously decorated fans. Simon Costin’s dramatic ‘Rose and the Nightingale’ neckpiece – which ruptures the wearer’s skin when worn – and a jet mourning brooch will communicate the rose as a metaphor for the savage pain of love unfulfilled and forever lost. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue and a programme of public events including talks, workshops and a Friday Late. Tickets are priced at £14.95 per person (including VAT + Booking Fees). Discounts available to senior citizens & children aged 7-18 years of age. Children under the age of 7 years old, attend for free. Please contact The Lexo Club Concierge if you would like more information or to make a booking with us... Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear is the first major V&A exhibition to celebrate the power, artistry and diversity of masculine attire and appearance. Contemporary looks by legendary designers and rising stars will be displayed alongside historical treasures from the V&A's collections and landmark loans: classical sculptures, Renaissance paintings, iconic photographs, and powerful film and performance.
The exhibition showcases the variety of possible masculinities across the centuries from the Renaissance to the global contemporary: from looks by Gucci, Harris Reed, Grace Wales Bonner and Raf Simons, to paintings by Sofonisba Anguissola and Joshua Reynolds, contemporary artworks by David Hockney and Omar Victor Diop, to an extract from an all-male dance performance by Matthew Bourne's New Adventures. The exhibition presents around 100 looks alongside 100 artworks, displayed thematically across three galleries, Undressed, Overdressed, and Redressed. Undressed explores the male body and underwear, looking at how classical European ideals of masculinity have been perpetuated and challenged over the centuries. Plaster casts of the Apollo Belvedere and the Farnese Hermes – which highlight a tradition of depicting idealised male bodies draped in textiles that reveal more than they conceal – will be juxtaposed with fashion by Jean-Paul Gaultier and A-COLD-WALL*, and prints and photography by Lionel Wendt, Zanele Muholi and Isaac Julien. Tickets are priced at £20 per person. Children under the age of 11 enter for free. Student discount is also available. Please contact The Lexo Club Concierge for more information regarding this event or to make a booking... The Other Art Fair is back this March 17, till the 20th at The Old Truman Brewery. So why not do something impulsive, get excited, and revel in the creativity? You belong here. Tickets start at £12 per person. Children under 9 years old, attend for free. A revelatory new take on art in Britain after the Second World War, a period when artists had to make sense of an entirely altered world.
Postwar Modern explores the art produced in Britain in the wake of a cataclysmic war. Certainty was gone, and the aftershocks continued, but there was also hope for a better tomorrow. These conditions gave rise to an incredible richness of imagery, forms and materials in the years that followed. Focusing on ‘the new’, Postwar Modern features 48 artists and around 200 works of painting, sculpture, photography, collage and installation. It explores the subjects that most preoccupied artists, among them the body, the post-atomic condition, the Blitzed streetscape, private relationships and imagined future horizons. As well as reconsidering well-known figures, the exhibition foregrounds artists who came to Britain as refugees from Nazism or as migrants from a crumbling empire, in addition to female artists who have tended to be overlooked. Opening times: Sun-Wed 10am-6pm (last entry 5pm), Thu-Sat 10am-8pm (last entry 7pm), Good Friday 12-8pm (last entry 7pm), Easter Monday 12-6pm (last entry 5pm), May Bank Holiday 2 May 12-6pm (last entry 5pm) and Jubilee Bank Holiday 3 Jun 12-8pm (last entry 7pm). Tickets are priced at £18 per person. Please do not hesitate to contact The Lexo Club Concierge for more information or to request tickets for this spectacular art exhibition in London...
