A revelatory new take on art in Britain after the Second World War, a period when artists had to make sense of an entirely altered world.
Postwar Modern explores the art produced in Britain in the wake of a cataclysmic war. Certainty was gone, and the aftershocks continued, but there was also hope for a better tomorrow. These conditions gave rise to an incredible richness of imagery, forms and materials in the years that followed. Focusing on ‘the new’, Postwar Modern features 48 artists and around 200 works of painting, sculpture, photography, collage and installation. It explores the subjects that most preoccupied artists, among them the body, the post-atomic condition, the Blitzed streetscape, private relationships and imagined future horizons. As well as reconsidering well-known figures, the exhibition foregrounds artists who came to Britain as refugees from Nazism or as migrants from a crumbling empire, in addition to female artists who have tended to be overlooked. Opening times: Sun-Wed 10am-6pm (last entry 5pm), Thu-Sat 10am-8pm (last entry 7pm), Good Friday 12-8pm (last entry 7pm), Easter Monday 12-6pm (last entry 5pm), May Bank Holiday 2 May 12-6pm (last entry 5pm) and Jubilee Bank Holiday 3 Jun 12-8pm (last entry 7pm). Shrouded in layers of speculation and folklore, this iconic British monument has spurred myths and legends that persist today. In this special exhibition, the British Museum will reveal the secrets of Stonehenge, shining a light on its purpose, cultural power and the people that created it.
Following the story of Britain and Europe from 4000 to 1000 BC, you'll learn about the restless and highly connected age of Stonehenge – a period of immense transformation and radical ideas that changed society forever. The human story behind the stones reveals itself through a variety of fascinating objects. Among these are stone axes from the North Italian Alps, stunning gold jewellery and astonishing examples of early metalwork including the Nebra Sky Disc – the world's oldest surviving map of the stars. A remarkably preserved 4,000-year-old timber circle dubbed Seahenge also takes centre stage in the show, on loan for the very first time. All these objects offer important clues about the beliefs, rituals, and complex worldview of Neolithic people, helping to build a vivid sense of life for Europe's earliest ancestors. Informed by ground-breaking recent archaeological and scientific discoveries, this landmark exhibition offers new insight on one of the world's great wonders, bringing the true story of Stonehenge into sharper focus than ever before. The Saatchi Gallery’s new exhibition takes its name from a project devised by the photographic co-op Magnum Photos back in 1969. Fresh off the back of Nixon’s election, a group including Bruce Davidson and Mary Ellen Mark set out to document a time of upheaval, protest and social inequality. This exhibition brings together some of those original images alongside new photos taken by a host of contemporary photographers including Balazs Gardi and Zora J Murff, holding up a mirror to the America of 50 years ago.
You’d hope that this half-century gap would offer an opportunity to see what’s changed in that time, but the images unwaveringly show how much has stayed the same, if not worsened. We see the same towns and families held back by poverty; racial inequality continuing to streak through issues as diverse as climate change, education and home ownership; and continued clashes between people and state. The exhibition frequently returns to the idea of the American Dream, with the sombre recognition that, despite the efforts of many Americans in the 60s, their dreams still haven’t come true. The young Black freedom marcher bearing an American flag in 1965 is displayed in the same room as photos from the BLM movement in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. In a photo so symbolic it’s hard to believe it wasn’t staged, a 60s anti-war protester holds up a chrysanthemum to a wall of National Guard soldiers. Fast forward to the present day, and there are riot police entering the fray amidst plumes of smoke, and Trump supporters storming the seat of democracy itself. America in Crisis runs at the Saatchi Gallery until 3rd April. Tickets can be booked on their website directly or by requesting them from The Lexo Club Concierge at any time. Explore Francis Bacon’s visceral paintings, where the line between human and animal is constantly blurred, reminding us that our primal instincts lie just below the surface.
Irish-born artist Francis Bacon was the horse-breeder’s son who became one of the most important painters of the 20th century. An openly gay man at a time when homosexuality was illegal, he was banished from his conservative family home by his father at 16. After that, he drifted through Berlin and Paris before establishing himself in London, with his formative years running parallel with some of the 20th century’s most profoundly disturbing events. This powerful exhibition will focus on Bacon’s unerring fascination with animals: how it both shaped his approach to the human body and distorted it; how, caught at the most extreme moments of existence, his figures are barely recognisable as either human or beast. It also explores how Bacon was mesmerised by animal movement, observing animals in the wild during trips to South Africa; filling his studio with wildlife books, and constantly referring to Eadweard Muybridge’s 19th-century photographs of humans and animals in motion. Whether chimpanzees, bulls, dogs, or birds of prey, Bacon felt he could get closer to understanding the true nature of humankind by watching the uninhibited behaviour of animals. Spanning Bacon’s 50-year career, highlights include some of Bacon’s earliest works and his last-ever painting, alongside a trio of bullfight paintings which will be exhibited together for the first time. Seen together, these raw expressions of anxiety and instinct – both animal and human – feel poignantly relevant today. You must book a ticket to enter the exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts and tickets range in price from £22 to £24 + VAT per person. They can be purchased from the Royal Academy website directly or by requesting them from the concierge at any time... Against the backdrop of war and revolution raging in Europe and the United States, a young man grew up in Bonn inspired by the ideals of freedom, and went on to compose some of the greatest works of music ever written.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s work changed the course of music, but his journey wasn’t easy. He challenged conventions, battled the blank page and struggled with progressive hearing loss to become one of the most influential composers of all time. See the mind of this creative genius at work through items belonging to the composer himself and manuscripts scrawled in his own distinctive hand. Discover how he blazed a trail as you pore over the frustrated scribbles and eureka moments in his sketchbook, his earliest known draft of a symphonic movement and surviving sketches of his much-loved Pastoral Symphony. You’ll also have a chance to meet the man behind the music by getting close to the personal belongings that shine a light on his everyday life. His tuning fork, a pocket notebook he used to jot down his ideas, and even a hand-scrawled laundry list are featured in this small exhibition. At the end of your journey, reflect on your own relationship with Beethoven’s music today, found in film, comics and literature. Learn how the Ninth Symphony – and its choral section based on Friedrich Schiller’s poem Ode to Joy – became the soundtrack to political and social movements worldwide, played everywhere from the Tiananmen Square student protests to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
