Visitors will find a diverse collection of documents and stories drawing on international peace treaties, textile samples, lonely hearts adverts and much more. They’ll also have the opportunity to step into a recreation of a nightclub – the infamous 43 Club in Soho – with all the grit, glamour and associated sights and sounds.
This exhibition is completely free and is currently at The National Archives in Richmond, London. If you are interested in attending then please contact the concierge for more information. Written by Liverpool based ex-police officer Tony Schumacher and starring Martin Freeman, The Responder holds a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing - sometimes darkly funny, sometimes painfully tragic, always challenging.
The Responder follows Chris (Martin Freeman), a crisis-stricken, morally compromised and unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat in Liverpool. Whilst trying to keep his head above water both personally and professionally, Chris is forced to take on a new rookie partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo). Both soon discover that survival in this high pressure, relentless, night-time world will depend on them either helping or destroying each other. Join this panel with cast members Martin Freeman, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Finan and Emily Fairn who will be joined by Executive Producer Laurence Bowen, Series Producer Rebecca Ferguson and writer Tony Schumacher. This digital event will take place at 6pm on Tuesday 18 January for a live webinar when you’ll be able to put your questions to the stars of the show and see exclusive clips ahead of broadcast. The Responder was produced by Dancing Ledge Productions for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. It was filmed in and around Liverpool City Region and supported by the LCR Production Fund through the Liverpool Film Office. The Light Festival at Battersea Power Station is returning as one of the best free activities to do in London this winter, brightening up the dark nights between 13th January - 27th February 2022.
Six spectacular installations, curated in partnership with the Light Art Collection, founded by the Amsterdam Light Festival, will be on display across London’s most exciting riverside neighbourhood, including a new area of public realm which visitors can now enjoy in front of the iconic Grade II* listed building on the banks of the River Thames. Two of the festival’s installations, Antenna Sud by Italian lighting designer Michela Bonzi, and Picto Sender Machine by Felipe Prado will be making their UK debut at Battersea Power Station, alongside Angelo Bonello’s Run Beyond which will be on display for the very first time in London. LAVA's 'Digital Origami Tigers' will also be the perfect selfie spot to celebrate Chinese New Year on 1st February. The Fitzrovia Chapel are delighted to announce an exhibition to celebrate the life and work of renowned performance artist Leigh Bowery (7 January to 6 February 2022).
The chapel is the only remaining building of the Middlesex Hospital, where Leigh died from AIDS on New Year’s Eve 1994. Leigh is a legendary figure who spans the worlds of art, fashion, dance, club and music. Essentially he himself was the living breathing work of art, his now iconic designs and costumes were ubiquitous and meant for Leigh, as he pushed his body through ever more extreme creations, designed to shock and thrill onlookers from dance floor to gallery. He was also known as one of Lucian Freud’s most famous models, sitting for the renowned painter for several years and becoming close friends, his large naked bald form becoming almost as recognisable as when wearing his own outlandish and ornately decorated costumes and creations.Leigh died of AIDS on New Year’s Eve 1994, shortly after his last performance at the Freedom Cafe, Soho in November, where people saw for the last time his legendary ‘Birth’ performance where he gave birth to his assistant and close friend Nicola Bateman live on stage, with Freud, Alexander Mcqueen and his other close friend Sue Tilley all on the front row. The Fitzrovia Chapel have worked with the Leigh Bowery Estate and in particular Nicola, whom he married shortly before his death, to create a stunning but poignant exhibition of Leigh’s costumes, presenting several of his iconic ‘looks’ against the backdrop of the gold mosaic ceiling and marble walls of the chapel. There will also be a specially produced short film with interviews with some of Leigh’s close friends and collaborators including Nicola, Sue Tilley, Boy George, Les Child, Richard Torry, David Holah and Lee Benjamin. Dr Rob Miller, who looked after Leigh when he was the Middlesex, and who is now a trustee of the chapel, will also be interviewed. The Lexo Club have a large allocation of complimentary tickets available to all of our members. Please contact the concierge now to be allocated tickets... Notting Hill gallery Studio West is hosting its first group show The Reality In Whytch You Create, featuring some of London’s most exciting emerging artists who all have an interest in dreams, alternative realities and surreal worlds. The exhibition features paintings from Alfie Rouy, Anna Woodward, Lydia Makin and Sholto Blissett, and a sound & vision installation from Salomé Wu, and it’s wonderfully trippy.
The exhibition explores reality in an expanded sense, drawing on dreams, subconscious experience, and myths. The artists separately create surreal depictions of space, unusual characters and new assemblages of images which disorient and challenge the veracity of our experiences. Largely through painting, accompanied by Wu’s sound and video work, each artist unveils pieces that collapse and blend facets of the imaginary with the everyday. If you are interested in this exhibition then please contact The Lexo Club Concierge... Over the past decade, Maclean’s celebrated works of incisive commentary on modern life cloaked in costume and graphic skins have travelled the world, from the National Gallery and Tate in London to the Venice Biennale, where she was the 2017 representative for Scotland.
That’s not Mi! is an unprecedented intervention of the 40-46 Riding House Street galleries and the climax of the Mimi project; upside mimi ᴉɯᴉɯ uʍop - the artists first fully animated film, debuted at Jupiter Artland in May 2021 before being recently screened at the London Film Festival in October 2021. upside mimi ᴉɯᴉɯ uʍop is a fairy tale: it has an apple-cheeked child, and a wizened crone. It has a test, challenging the protagonist as it escalates, and it has a dramatic conclusion. Mimi, a babe, is lost in the woods. “Maybe you can save Mi,” she says to the hand-mirror lying on the grass. But the mirror, like every fairy-tale antagonist, does more harm than good. It isolates her as it defines her, bullies her and tricks her, and most of all divides her in two. Maclean mirrors and inverts throughout the exhibition, employing technology and fabrication to hit repeated notes of uneasy, uncanny perfection in a seamless, sometimes seemingly virtual space in which the viewer is implicated. Gravity pulls both ways, with each work partnered to an inverted double, perpetually upending to reveal new forms and faces- a neat shorthand for the mysterious lack of an anchoring horizon in digitally mediated life. Woven tapestries mix traditional blending of colours in an almost painterly fashion with disconcerting synthetic fibres, short-circuiting a traditional process by both modernising it and undermining it. Paintings and sculptures of the two Mimis seem flawless and endlessly repeatable, a levelling into homogeneity via digital painting and 3D printing that highlights the creepy effacement of individuality brought about by screens, our modern mirrors. The paintings aren’t, however, infinitely repeatable. There is a hand on top of the digitally printed brushstrokes, embellishing the mechanical, quietly insisting upon the individuality of highlights and the tenacity of imperfection, a new narcissism of small differences that represents freedom from the forces — social, pharmaceutical, technological — compelling women to be more critical of themselves. If you are interested in attending this exhibition then please contact The Lexo Club Concierge for more information and to arrange your attendance... Following similar events at Covent Garden with the LEGO Santa Express in 2015, Santa’s Workshop in 2016 and the most recent exhibition based on Rebuild the World in 2020, the LEGO Group is planning to bring another festive display to the location this year.
Titled the Carousel of Creativity, the installation is a joint digital and physical venture that will feature five sections with a character in each – a few of which can be seen in the provided concept art. However, the last area will consist of a screen that displays creations that can be sent in by fans using a free LEGO app. Anyone can submit a model for the Carousel of Creativity via the LEGO Life app, with a selection of chosen builds being displayed on the dedicated screen on the installation, in LEGO stores across the UK, as well as on the official online store. You can start to visit the LEGO Carousel of Creativity at Covent Garden until January 2, 2022. A pop-up shop will also be available at the location, which is also just five minutes from the flagship Leicester Square store. NOW Gallery is delighted to announce that multidisciplinary artist Lydia Chan has been selected for the 2021 Design Commission. The aim of this Commission is to create a space for visitors to come and perform in, interacting with a narrative that explores the bubbly fantastical qualities of science fiction in a time where science is so filled with doom and gloom. Lydia has collaborated with digital artists Songyee Kim and Thibault Evrard to create an AR experience, a portal between digital and physical.
A self-defined maximalist, Lydia is a set designer and multidisciplinary artist who loves monsters, designer toys and cartoons. The artist’s bold and narrative building aesthetic has established her as one of the most exciting young set designers working in the industry today, with clients including Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Vogue China, Gucci and Converse. Lydia is interested in nature through the goggles of the artificial, exploring the idea that through isolation in our homes, the natural world becomes more foreign to us. Lockdown may be over but isolation remains in our subconsciousness. Like space explorers treading on a foreign planet, we are still acclimating to the attributes of our new environment. Through an alternative lens she has reinterpreted nature as an alien world. Tickets for this event are complimentary for all members and can be obtained by requesting them from The Lexo Club Concierge at any time. The British artist expands his conceptual practice with a new body of work comprising an interactive installation, large-scale neon and clock. A selection of works on paper will also be released online during the show. Characteristically deadpan in their humour, these quick-witted drawings satirise everyday occurrences and conversations.
The evolving installation ‘Mayfair Tennis Ball Exchange’ transforms the two spaces of Gallery 1. Visitors are invited to bring an old ball to swap with a new one from the numerous shelves that line the walls. Gradually the rows of yellow spheres are replaced with misshapen and discoloured forms that represent the joy of trade. Discussing the origins of this work, Shrigley explains: “My dog likes tennis balls. I throw them and she chases them. [Her interest is] more about exchange than possession.” If you're interested in visiting then be sure to inform the concierge... The latest pop up named ‘The Collect’, will be located between Marble Arch and Oxford Circus tube stations and will showcase eight bold and up and coming brands. The selected brands use design as a tool to inspire change, with gender fluid fashion, ecological integrity, social justice and the use of innovative materials and mindful production.
Included is Bleaq, an inspiring community of designers who use creativity as a catalyst for social, political and environmental action, and Archive Six, a top Depop seller brand that specialises in second-hand clothes and rare vintage items. In common, the brands all have a passion for sustainability, and many challenge the conventional standards in the beauty and fashion industries, taking an inclusive approach and questioning the norm. At the entrance of the store, there will be an immersive art installation by artist, Carson Parkin-Fairley complementing the boldness of the brands. It will involve a ‘tropical haven’ with bright, vibrant colours and visitors will be encouraged to take pictures of themselves in the space which she describes as ‘a world transformed by colour, joy and pattern, where nobody is a stranger and everyone is welcome’. If you are interested in attending and would like more information then be sure to contact The Lexo Club Concierge at any time.
